How to Request a Lonoke County Birth Certificate

In person is usually the fastest way. Go to the Lonoke County Health Unit at 104 N. Center Street. Bring a valid photo ID. Fill out the form at the desk, pay, and if it is before 3:00 PM you can often leave with your certificate the same day. Staff there can walk you through the form if anything is unclear.

Mail requests go to the Division of Vital Records at the Little Rock address above. Include a completed application form, a copy of your photo ID, proof of your relationship to the person named on the record (if not your own), and a check or money order for the fee. Mail takes longer, often several weeks, so factor that in if you have a deadline coming up.

Online orders through VitalChek are available around the clock. You pay a state fee plus a VitalChek service charge. Certificates come by mail after processing. This is the best option if you cannot visit in person and need to start the process right away.

Note: Phone orders are also accepted through VitalChek. Call their number listed on the Arkansas vital records page if you prefer to order that way.

What You Need to Apply

Gather these items before you go or send your request. Missing documents slow things down and can require a second trip.

  • Completed birth certificate application form
  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID)
  • Proof of relationship if the record is for someone else (birth certificate showing parentage, marriage certificate, court order)
  • Payment of $12 for the first copy, $10 for each extra copy in the same order
  • For mail requests: check or money order payable to Arkansas Department of Health

If you lack a government-issued photo ID, call the Division of Vital Records at (501) 661-2174 to ask what alternate documents they accept. There is a process for people who cannot produce standard ID. Staff are used to these situations and can guide you through the alternatives.

Birth Certificate Fees in Lonoke County

Fees are set by the state, so they are the same at the Lonoke County Health Unit and at the state office. The first copy of a birth certificate costs $12. Each additional copy ordered at the same time costs $10. There is also a $12 non-refundable search fee that is included in the base cost. If a record is not found, you do not get that fee back.

At the local health unit, you can pay by cash or check. Do not mail cash. Mail requests must include a check or money order. VitalChek accepts credit and debit cards for online orders but adds a separate service fee.

If you need multiple certified copies, ordering them all at once saves money. Each additional copy in the same order is $10, compared to $12 if you come back later for another one.

Who Can Get Lonoke County Birth Records

Arkansas law limits access to birth records that are under 100 years old. Under Arkansas Code 20-18-305, the following people can request a certified copy: the person named on the record (if age 18 or older), a parent or legal guardian, a spouse, an adult child or sibling, a legal representative, or someone with a direct and tangible interest in the record (such as an heir in a legal proceeding).

Birth records that are 100 years old or older are public. Anyone can request them without showing a relationship. Records from 1914 through the 1920s are now crossing into that public window each year, which makes them accessible to genealogists and researchers without any restriction.

Government agencies and courts have their own access provisions separate from the general public rules. If you are acting on behalf of a government body or under a court order, the process may be different. Contact the Division of Vital Records for guidance.

Historical Lonoke County Birth Records

Statewide birth registration in Arkansas started February 1, 1914. Lonoke County was formed in 1873, so there are four decades of county history before state records began. Births during that period were not officially recorded at the state level.

FamilySearch has a page dedicated to Lonoke County genealogy at familysearch.org/en/wiki/Lonoke_County,_Arkansas_Genealogy. This resource lists digitized collections, historical documents, and research tips for the county. Census records, church registers, and county deed records can often help confirm birth years and family connections for the pre-1914 period.

The Lonoke County Clerk holds marriage records from 1873. Those records can serve as supporting documents in genealogy research when birth records are absent. If you are tracing a family line and need to verify a birth year indirectly, marriage records and probate files from the Clerk's office are worth checking.

Lonoke County Clerk Records

The Lonoke County Clerk handles a range of official county records. These include marriage licenses and marriage records (from 1873), probate case files, circuit court records, voter registration rolls, and other county court documents. The Clerk does not hold birth or death records. Those are entirely within the Arkansas Department of Health's system.

If you need a marriage certificate or probate file to support a birth record request or prove family relationships, the County Clerk is the right contact. For example, if you are requesting a birth certificate on behalf of a deceased parent's estate, you may need to show probate documents from the Clerk's office to prove your standing.
