Where to Get Calhoun County Birth Records
The Calhoun County Health Unit in Hampton is the local office for birth certificate requests. It sits at 106 W. 2nd Street, Hampton, AR 71744. You can call ahead at (870) 798-3218. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Same-day service is available for people who arrive before 3:00 PM.
Calhoun County is the least populous county in Arkansas. Still, the health unit here has full access to the statewide vital records database, so you can get any Arkansas birth record from this office, not just records for births in Calhoun County. That's true at any of the 75 county health units across the state since the network was updated in 2018.
If the Hampton unit is inconvenient, you can go directly to the ADH Division of Vital Records at 4815 West Markham Street, Slot 44, Little Rock, AR 72205. Phone: (501) 661-2174. Hours and fees are the same as the local office.
How to Request a Calhoun County Birth Certificate
Requesting a Calhoun County birth certificate is straightforward. You can do it in person, by mail, or online. In person is the fastest route. Walk into the Hampton health unit with your ID and payment, fill out the request form, and you'll typically get the certificate the same day.
Online ordering is available through VitalChek, the state's authorized online vendor. You'll create an account, submit your request, upload a copy of your ID, and pay by credit card. VitalChek adds a convenience fee on top of the state's standard fee. Expect the certificate to arrive by mail within several business days after processing begins.
Mail requests go to the ADH Division of Vital Records in Little Rock. Send your completed application, a legible copy of a valid photo ID, and a check or money order made out to the Arkansas Department of Health. Mail requests tend to take two to four weeks. Phone orders can be placed through VitalChek as well, which works like the online process but over the phone.
What You Need to Apply
Gather these items before you visit the Hampton health unit or send a mail request. Missing documents will delay your request.
- Completed vital records application form
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID card)
- Full name as it appears on the birth record
- Date and place of birth
- Names of both parents as listed on the certificate
- Payment of $12 for the first copy
If you are requesting the certificate for a minor child and you are a listed parent, no extra paperwork is needed. Legal guardians must bring certified court documents. If an attorney submits a request, they need a signed authorization from their client. The Arkansas Department of Health website has the application form available to download before your visit.
Note: Bring original documents or certified copies of legal paperwork; photocopies of guardianship orders are not accepted.
Birth Certificate Fees in Calhoun County
The fee is $12 for the first certified copy of a Calhoun County birth certificate. If you order more copies of the same record at the same time, each extra copy is $10. These fees are set by the Arkansas Department of Health and do not vary by county.
Arkansas also charges a $12 non-refundable search fee. This applies even when no record is found. If the search returns nothing, you still owe $12. For this reason, try to confirm that a record exists before you pay, especially if you're searching for an event before 1914 or for a birth that may not have been registered.
The Hampton health unit takes cash and personal checks. The Little Rock state office also accepts money orders. VitalChek charges your credit card. Make checks payable to the Arkansas Department of Health. Call (870) 798-3218 to confirm current fees before you visit, since state fees can change.
Who Can Get Calhoun County Birth Records
Arkansas restricts who can get a certified copy of a birth certificate less than 100 years old. The law is Arkansas Code 20-18-305. It limits access to the registrant (if 18 or older), parents listed on the certificate, legal guardians, spouses, adult children, and attorneys acting for any of these people. Government agencies with a legal need can also access records.
If you don't fit one of those categories, you may still be able to get a non-certified or informational copy, but it won't be valid for legal uses like passport applications, school enrollment, or Social Security. For legal purposes, you need a certified copy with the raised state seal.
Birth records that are 100 or more years old are open to the public. Anyone can request a copy of a Calhoun County birth record from 1914 through 1925 or before without showing proof of relationship. These records are commonly used for genealogy and estate research. The 100-year rule applies the same way at every Arkansas health unit.
Historical Calhoun County Birth Records
Arkansas began recording births statewide on February 1, 1914. Births in Calhoun County before that date were not captured in the state system. If you need to prove a birth from the 1800s or early 1900s, the official vital records database won't have it.
The FamilySearch Calhoun County genealogy page lists historical record collections for the county. Census records, church registers, and cemetery inscriptions are often used as substitutes. The Calhoun County Clerk has marriage records going back to 1851 and probate records from 1850. Probate filings sometimes name birth dates and family relationships, making them useful for pre-1914 research.
The Hampton Public Library holds some local history materials. Digitized Arkansas records from the early registration period are also searchable through FamilySearch. If the birth was recorded but not before 1914, try state archives and the Arkansas History Commission, which preserves older vital records that survived.
The VitalChek portal for Arkansas is one way to order Calhoun County birth certificates online. VitalChek is the state's authorized ordering partner and processes requests securely.

Calhoun County Clerk and Related Records
The Calhoun County Clerk in Hampton handles records other than birth certificates. The Clerk maintains marriage records from 1851, probate records from 1850, and Quorum Court records. Marriage licenses are issued from this office. The Clerk also serves as the county voter registrar.
If you need a marriage record or want to look up a probate file, go to the County Clerk's office, not the health unit. These are separate agencies with separate records. The Association of Arkansas Counties page for Calhoun County has contact details for the Clerk's office.
Calhoun County has no separate Circuit Court clerk for divorce records, but divorce cases are filed and maintained through the circuit court system. The Arkansas Court Connect system provides some online access to court case records. For certified copies of court documents, contact the Circuit Clerk directly. Court records are not the same as birth records, but they may contain birth dates and family data useful for research.
